Elementary Disclosure Document 2017-2018
Mrs. Biddulph – 5th Grade
These are standard policies for fifth grade; however, adaptations based upon individual needs may be necessary at times.
Class Description: This year will be a fantastic year for learning. Students will be absorbing a great deal in mathematics, science, language arts, social studies, visual arts, music, technology, and physical education. There will also be a continued emphasis on responsible and respectful behavior in our classroom and school community. Students will be cooperatively engaged in their learning.
Goals and Objectives: I will be teaching from the Utah State Core Standards for fifth grade which can be seen at www.uen.com. Instructional Materials: McGraw-Hill Corporation Wonders *other materials as applicable
Instructional Practices: High educational expectations will be established in our classroom and students are expected to behave appropriately and work hard. This will give them the greatest opportunity to enjoy their learning through active engagement. I will be using a variety of instructional techniques and curriculum designs promoting student learning and discovery. Students will learn through whole class, small groups, partner, and independent instruction. We will work together as a classroom community, ensuring everyone learns new concepts from each other and helps one another to succeed.
Attendance/Tardies: Punctual attendance is important. Students will miss instruction if they do not arrive on time. We cover important core curriculum in all subjects each day. Please keep absences to an absolute minimum. Our class website will be updated daily with assignments that were covered each day. You can print missed work off online, pick it up at the end of the day, or it can be sent home with a student.
Homework/Communication Folder: Each student will be provided with an orange Crestview Communication Folder with a Weekly Planning Sheet inside (instead of the planner). Folders will be used to transport homework, completed/corrected schoolwork, and important information. We will fill out the Weekly Planner Sheet together each day including assignments covered for that day. The planner sheet needs to be signed by a parent once and turned in on the last day of school each week. It is important to have the Communication Folder with the Weekly Planner Sheet in it at school each day.
Homework/Assignments: In addition to a weekly reading fluency and comprehension packet, any assignments that are not completed in class will be considered homework. Late homework will receive a 10% doc. Any assignment more than two weeks late will receive a zero score. Be sure to check gradebook weekly for any missing assignments. Homework will generally consist of 20-40 minutes per night. A student should never work on more than an hour of homework each night. We will also complete a few group projects and presentations. Students will be required to participate equally with classmates. These grades will be given as a group and in addition to curriculum, are intended to teach conflict resolution and teamwork.
Class Rules: We are building a classroom community, which necessitates a safe learning environment, where students take the necessary challenges needed to learn. Our classroom rules include:
Show respect for yourself – You are in school every day to learn, grow, and have fun. Try your best every
day to make a difference in your education.
Show respect for others – Be the kind of person you like to be around. Do something nice for someone
every day. Do not take away someone else’s right to an education.
Show respect for our school –Take care of it inside and out. It is important to our education.
Consequences: If students do not follow rules inside the classroom, the consequences are as follows:
a. 1st offense: Verbal Warning
b. 2nd offense: Stop and Think
c. 3rd offense: Think time – refocus. Be removed to another room, to focus on and write about what they did that was inappropriate and how they plan to improve to ensure appropriate behavior.
d. 4th offense: Principal’s Office
Grading Procedures: Clear standards and expectations are established for all students at each grade level. To be on grade level, students are expected to demonstrate knowledge of the information taught with increasing independence. Students will be graded on various tests, journal work, homework, reading logs, class participation, and other assignments. There will also be tests in all major subjects to ensure that students are keeping up with expected learning outcomes.
A 94%- 100% C+ 77%-79%
A- 90%- 93% C 73%-76%
B+ 87%- 89% C- 70%-72%
B 83%- 86% N 0%-69% ( N stands for Incomplete)
B- 80%- 82%
FERPA: Opinion, informational, and narrative student writing is the focus of the writing core. One effective practice we will be using will be to allow students to examine their peers writing. Students edit their own and their partners writing by utilizing rubrics, editing marks etc. This editing of work may also occur in other subject areas. Another requirement of the core is that students improve in listening and speaking skills. Because of this requirement and best practices, students will have the opportunity throughout the year to perform in front of others (oral reports, presentations, etc.). In addition, we will display ungraded assignments, projects, and art which identify a student. Students’ best work can be an example for other students. Finally, on occasion, students may help pass out corrected or graded assignments, tests, etc. The
parent will show their approval of this last paragraph by signing the document below.
Student Concerns: Please list any concerns I should be aware of that would help me positively aid your child’s growth both academically and socially. Please also list any allergies or necessary medications. I am happy to meet with you anytime. Please schedule an appointment ahead of time so I am able to give you my full attention with little interruption.
I am excited and delighted to be working with your children!
Thank you!
